Kim Johnson, BMX Racing Legend

kim johnson bmx legend

Kim Johnson was known as one of the early factory girls back in the hay day of BMX racing. Kim rode for Scot Breithaupt’s SE factory team and then went on to ride for the Vans team. During her time on the Vans team she became one of the first girls to appear in a BMX print ad. After her time on the Vans team, Kim rode for Howie Cohen’s Kuwahara Factory Team. Kim became one of the first African American champions of BMX.

Kim went to high school with another BMX legend, Pete Loncarevich. She sometimes had to race him and other future legends when there was no Powder Puff class.

The Elite Women classes of today are direct-descendants of the Powder Puff classes of Kim’s day which lead to generations of champions working to make women’s BMX Racing what it is today.

It is with a very heavy heart to announce the passing of our dear friend and fellow racer Kimberley A. Johnson passed away in 2015 due to heart complications but her memory lives on here.

If you have anything you’d like to share about Kim please post them in the comments section below. We couldn’t find any photos of her racing during our search. you have any please send them our way.
